Ready for a career in law enforcement with a great agency?

The Corson County Sheriff’s Office, based in McIntosh, South Dakota, has an immediate opening for a full-time Deputy Sheriff.


The Sheriff’s Office is a small, proactive law enforcement agency located on the southern half of the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation in North Central South Dakota. The Sheriff’s Office is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of McLaughlin, with a substation located at the McLaughlin City Hall. 


Unlike many small agencies in South Dakota, Corson County has specialty assignments including a K-9 Unit, Drug Recognition Expert, D.A.R.E. Instructor, and Bicycle Patrol Officer, and we’re an active participant in the North Central South Dakota Multi-Jurisdiction Criminal Enforcement Team which consists of officers from seven counties in the region – Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Edmunds, McPherson, Walworth, and Ziebach. 


Duties include, but are not limited to: Proactive enforcement of State and Federal laws; Protection of life and property; Investigation of criminal activity; Report preparation; Service and execution of court orders and civil process; Court Security; and Providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies in Corson County.   


To be considered, applicants must: Be of good moral character; Complete and be able to pass a comprehensive background check; Be able to work independently with little to no supervision; Possess good communication skills; and, Must be certified (or eligibile for certification) by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commission. Prior certification is not required.


COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE 

Corson County offers competitive wages which are dependent on experience, prior training, and certifications, with an excellent schedule! Employees are eligible for, and encouraged to participate in, federally funded overtime opportunities! 


INSURANCE

Benefits afforded to Corson County employees are second to none, and include: Major medical insurance (100% for employees w/family plans available); Vision and Dental Insurance (100% for employee & spouse); and AFLAC (Cancer Plan paid 100% for employees, $10.00 per month toward elective AFLAC plans, 50% of family elective AFLAC plans paid by the county)


RETIREMENT
Corson County participates in the South Dakota Retirement System (Class B Public Safety)


EQUIPMENT

All equipment necessary for deputies to do their job safely and effectively is provided, including: Take-home patrol vehicles; State-of-the-art in-car and body cameras; weapons (patrol rifles, shotguns, handguns, and less-lethal impact munitions); Uniform equipment (body armor, duty gear, etc. provided): and, an annual uniform allowance.


TRAINING
In addition to basic training, Corson County affords various opportunities for advanced and instructor-level training and an 8-week field training program.
